The depth of Franz Liszt particularly touches me, and I think this aspect of the composer deserves special attention. Barren shadows, brooding loneliness, Venetian mourning, mossy and eternal past. Then the abundance of life, expansive pathos, depth and authenticity, grandeur and extreme restraint, compassion and closeness to death, all reflecting a search for faith, wrestling with doubt, and ultimately grounded in Christian spirituality.
After four decades of performing this repertoire, I am ready to share five thematic programs that trace a spiritual path through Liszt’s music. These are not comprehensive surveys but deeply personal artistic statements, curated from a lifetime’s relationship with this composer.
The arc spans from Vallée d’Obermann to Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude, revealing Liszt’s spiritual evolution from worldly struggle to ultimate transcendence.
Each program stands alone as a complete recital of around 60 minutes, or they can be experienced together as a five-concert cycle.
